Flugelhorn and The Cory Band star Helen Williams has shared her thoughts on our flugelhorn mouthpieces in this month’s issue of Brass band World Magazine.
Here is her review of the 2FL.
Like many top players, Cory’s flugel, Helen Williams, isn’t enticed to switch mouthpieces often, but was impressed by three models of flugelhorn mouthpiece from Alliance’s range
‘I’ve always been a player of few mouthpieces – you could say that I know what I like, so it was interesting to be sent a selection of the new Alliance flugelhorn mouthpieces to try out.
Being a brass band flugel player and, indeed, writing this review for a brass band magazine, I requested mouthpieces that would be similar to my existing Denis Wick 4f to, hopefully, help to give me the blended sound that I strive for, whilst also still enabling me to project when I perform as a soloist.
First out of the box was the 3FL (cup diameter: 16.75 mm; rim: 5 mm; bore: 4.6 mm; cup: deep), which felt comfortable and facilitated a warm sound throughout the register. Intonation was good and it was easy to move around the range.
In comparison, the next mouthpiece – the 3CF (cup diameter: 16.75 mm; rim: 5 mm; bore: 4.6 mm; cup: medium/deep) was slightly shallower, but still had a good tone and was very easy to play. Brighter sounding than I would choose, this will be a popular choice with brass band flugelhorn players due to its great intonation and the gratifying ease with which the notes speak throughout the range.
My personal favourite, however, was the 2FL Prestige (cup diameter: 17 mm; rim: 5 mm; bore: 4.6 mm; cup: deep), with which pitches felt more accurate and slotted easily into place, all with a particularly clear and beautifully warm, sweet tone. As with the other mouthpieces tested, the extra weight really seemed to help the sound and the rim felt super comfortable on my embouchure, which combined with a bit of a bite to the inside edge of the rim, which I always like to give me more control over my flexibility and tone.’
All Alliance mouthpieces are supplied with a handy leather pouch, inside a gift box, and are engineered and manufactured in England. Available in silver plate, or in silver plate with a gold rim and cup, they are available from specialist music retailers or direct from the Alliance website. Prices: 3FL/3CF in silver-plated – £52.45 inc. vat; same models in silver-plated body with gold cup/rim – £90.30 inc vat; Prestige 2FL silver-plated body with gold rim cup/rim – £109.76 inc. vat.
